Apparently, Les Claypool from PRIMUS did an audition for Metallica. Now that would have been an interesting new direction…

For all you kids out there that don’t know who I’m talking about – Les Claypool and his buddies Larry LaLonde and Tim Alexander formed Primus somewhere in the mid-eighties and slapped the world around its ears with the freakiest defunkt funk ever heard. One of their albums is called “Sailing The Sees of Cheese” and that’s a perfect definition of their sound.
